The Indy Art Center’s Teen Institute Classes are specifically designed for teen artists who want a rigorous art experience. Modeled after our adult programming, we offer high school-aged students multiple ways to engage their creative interests and explore a variety of media. Our programs also provide a great way for students wishing to apply to an art and design school an opportunity to prepare portfolio-ready artwork.

In this 4-week workshop, students will design and build their own clay illuminated houses using slab construction techniques. They?ll explore form, structure, and decorative details to create unique houses that can hold a tea light, learning how to combine creativity and craftsmanship in a functional art piece.All materials provided; no experience needed. *Completed work will be kiln-fired and available for pickup at Guest Services approximately three weeks after the final class. Gain confidence through hands-on experience in the wood shop and sculpture studio! Students may choose between two projects to complete over the 7 week course: a bedside table with hardwood top and welded steel frame or a carved wooden wall shelf with welded brackets. Join us in the hot shop! This is a great class for new and returning students to practice proper tool use, navigation of the glass studio, and fundamental techniques used when working with glass. Students will learn from live demonstrations and take turns to complete their very own glass pieces. Students must have a minimum height of 56 inches to be able to look into the furnace, full vision capability, gripping strength with both hands, and adequate hand-eye coordination. Led by an experienced instructor, students will explore color, texture, and design at their own pace, with guidance tailored to their skill level. Let?s talk clothing?everyone wears it, but not everyone knows how to make it. In this class, you will. You?ll learn to read and sew from patterns, starting with simple tops and pants. You?ll also explore creative fabric combinations through projects like a quilted wall hanging or a custom pennant. In this 4-week workshop, Teens will design and create their own clay slab planters. They?ll explore patterns, sgraffito, and other techniques to add texture and decorative detail, developing both form and surface design.
