Art Belongs to Everybody

At the Indy Art Center, we believe that Art Belongs to Everybody. Foundational to our mission as an organization is a commitment to providing opportunities for creative experiences to people of all ages and physical abilities. To maximize accessibility, we are raising funds to build an ADA-compliant ramp to our Cultural Complex building.

The Project

Renovations to the Cultural Complex to address accessibility are long overdue. This multipurpose space is used by artists and students working in both 2D and 3D art mediums, veterans participating in our annual Veterans Art Day, and Youth + Teen artists. The Cultural Complex currently has a ramp leading to the main door, but it does not pass ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards. By building an ADA-compliant ramp at the entry to the building, we continue to strengthen our commitment to our fundamental belief that art belongs to everybody, helping make creative experiences inclusive and accessible to all.

The Details

The Cultural Complex, located behind our main building, will receive the following:

Upgrading this ramp and entryway will increase accessibility and help our historic organization stay inviting and inclusive for generations to come.

The campaign is part of the CreatINg Livable Communities Partnership between AARP Indiana and IHCDA’s CreatINg Places. It is a pilot partnership that assists Indiana communities in funding place-based projects for aging in place. In addition to matching funds from IHCDA, this project is eligible for up to $5,000 in matching funds from AARP Indiana.

About Indy Art Center

The Indy Art Center’s Broad Ripple campus is a staple of the community – a place to make and see art, discover your passions, connect with others, heal, grow, and celebrate. As a living art space, the Art Center aims to inspire creative expression and appreciation from the moment you step foot on its campus. The Indy Art Center ranks among the top 15 most visited area attractions in the Indy-Metro area, welcoming more than 200,000 visitors annually. Our visitors will experience the full life cycle of art, from art making in studios to exhibitions in the galleries and ARTSPARK, our 9.5-acre outdoor gallery featuring public art in nature.

The Cultural Complex, a multipurpose building at the edge of ARTSPARK, is a key structure on our campus. In 2002, the Art Center bought the former Broad Ripple Kindergarten building on the western edge of its campus and renamed it the Cultural Complex. Over the years since, we have leased space in the building to other cultural organizations and used it for classes, workshops, and storage. Perched on the edge of the White River, the Cultural Complex occupies a valuable piece of ARTSPARK real estate and houses 6 studio spaces, including a Makerspace where art and technology combine.
